Rescue the Rescuer

presented by Marlene O'Neill Laberge, MSW LFDM

This workshop is designed with dog pros, rescue staff/volunteers and animal caregivers in mind.  We will explore empathic strain, secondary traumatic stress and burnout.  You will learn about tools for self-monitoring, as well as strategies for regulating and mitigating chronic and situational stress.

Marlene holds her Masters in Social Work and is a Licensed Family Dog Mediator.  For over 20 years has worked as a Child and Family Therapist, specializing in the impact of trauma and attachment disruptions on parent-child relationships.  She is a Certified Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator and a Certified Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapist.  In 2019, she began fostering and subsequently adopted Cooper, a bulldog-mix.  When Cooper began to struggle with sensitivity to noises, novel experiences and strangers, Marlene found herself searching for new perspectives in the field of dog training and subsequently became fascinated by the impact of caregiving for challenging dogs on the humans who love them.  Her business Ruff Relationships is the culmination of this journey.

Why Dogs React

Does your dog choose fight over flight? Does your dog cower when people approach? This workshop is to help you better understand your dog’s behaviour and give you the skills to better manage it. While it can present in many forms, reactivity is a common behaviour issue. Simply put, reactivity can be defined as an overreaction to external stimuli. Dogs may be reactive to people, dogs, other animals, noises, motion, or any combination of the above. Reactive dogs may be fearful, frustrated, aggressive, and/ or over-excited.
